Some Old Work

I was digging through some folders on my computer this evening and came across some old art and fashion work. I thought I might share...

I'm not saying this is the cream of the crop you understand, but I thought it was interesting looking back at some  pre-Saint Martins, pre-shoemaking stuff. A lot of these were very assignment-specific, and I remember hating how restricted I felt in my design. What I'm trying to say is that my aesthetics, if even present, are hidden rather deeply in some of these. There are a mix of sketches, gesture drawings, illustrator things, and some cheesy photo shop manipulations we had to learn to do. Blah blah blah, enough disclaimers!

Anyhow please feel free to comment!

Astounding work. Even if they're restricted and not really "you" to you, you're definitely in there in some of them.

You have amazing technical skills. I wish you made comics so I could work with you. xxx

I love the two red dresses at the top. I would love to own the one on the right! =)

I like how all the pieces have their own style and personality. You can tell that you spent a lot of time on them.

Side Note: Hi, My name is Sarah. I started following you on twitter because I'm also an art school student and ended up with a lot of the same problems in school, so I completely felt your anguish. I really like how you've kept going and hope you the best.
(I know, you probably don't necessarily need to here all that from a total stranger, but I thought I should introduce myself :)

Wow, your design work has really come on since then. Those excellent drawing/illustration skills will always help you when conveying your designs to others though. Interestingly, the one that really stands out to me is the one in the middle with footwear in it :-)

Wow, thank you, all of you.

Danielle- thanks, I wish I did too. I came across some old drawings I did last time I was at my mum's house- I was trying to be the next Michael Turner. Wait, no I was trying to BE Michael Turner. Wasn't meant to be, I'm afraid.

Renee- Thanks! I tried to make that for myself, but found I did the pattern wrong. I was very new to pattern cutting back then.

Draona- Thanks for introducing yourself, fellow artist! :) What are you studying?

Carrie- funny, you're the third person to say that. I really should make a print of that. It was a cheesy assignment- illustrate a spring queen in the style of a 1920's vogue cover. I did a lot of research and found that the 20s favoured a certain flat look paired with decadence and asian influence So that's what I pulled together.

Lori- hee, those were three photos I found, and then changed around, put clothes on them, and used the heels they were wearing to make boots. It was an exercise in photoshop class.

@The Redhead: Have you looked at any of Scott McCloud's books on comics? I bet you could be the next David Mack. :)

(I will convince you to draw for me, darnit!)

Haha, I love David Mack, and thank you! Honestly, I'm more than a little partial to Stuart Immonen, and wish I could draw like him! He makes me happy.

But I dunno... I know a lot of comic people, but I'm not a storyteller. I just draw girls, mostly.

Oh, I *love* Immonen. So many wonderful styles. I presume you like Nextwave? ;)

And that's ok! I totally only write girls. Well, mostly. :P

Nextwave is one of my favourite comics EVER!

We'll, I might be able to help with you mini things.... more along the lines of 1-3 panel things. Maybe something like A Softer World, but without photographs.
